Managing Your Copyright Interests in the 21st Century
Grace Hopper International Conference In Celebration of Women In Computing

The World’s Largest Gathering of Women Technologists
Failure to understand basic copyright concepts is an intellectual pandemic. The Internet is rife with misinformation that causes financial hardship to teachers, writers, and creators of all types who do not understand the true value of their work. This workshop presents copyright myths and pitfalls for women who create original material through teaching and/or writing. Participants in this workshop will be better equipped to protect their work and stop being taken advantage of by unscrupulous third parties. Participants will learn about the pleasures and perils of collaborative (joint) copyright, fallacies of “work for hire,” the pro’s and cons of licensing versus transferring copyright interests, and basic fair use tips as well as strategies for protecting their interests in a copyright world still stuck in a pre-technological society. Take-aways include real-life solutions to real-life problems. By analyzing real-life scenarios, attendees will be able to correctly apply basic copyright principles to their own work. In addition, useful handouts inclusive of original flow chart(s) will be provided to reinforce copyright principles after the conference is concluded.
